State of the art equipment from Murphy and Son Laboratories

Murphy and Son Laboratories have invested heavily in state of the art equipment to supplement, improve and expand the testing that we have provided for over 100 years.

Chemistry Laboratory:

Below is a list of typical tests routinely carried out within our laboratories.

Liquor Analysis Liquor potability/brewing efficiency
ABV Required by Customs and Excise
Present Gravity Shows attenuation of beer
Original Gravity Required for extract calculation
Shelf Life Trials Using our in house Tannometer
Spent Grain Analysis Part of the FEMAS requirement
Suspended Solids Part of the analysis for effluent charges
COD Analysis Chemical oxygen demand for effluent charges
VDK Analysis Diacetyl (butterscotch flavour/smell) analysis
Full Malt Analysis This gives the full breakdown of malted barley for brewing purposes

Thermo-Fisher Scientific Gallery ‘Beer Master’

We are pleased to announce that we are the first in the UK to purchase a Thermo-Fisher Scientific Gallery “Beer Master”.

This machine will enable us to carry out a range of tests that are both efficient and accurate to enable a fast turnaround of results:

Sulphur Dioxide 10ppm allergen labeling requirement in small pack
Bitterness For beer labeling and information
Liquor Analysis Alkalinity, Calcium, Magnesium, Sulphate, Chloride, Nitrate and pH
FAN Free Amino Nitrogen in wort
Beta Glucans Detects the quantity of high molecular weight Beta Glucan that affect filterability
Organic Acids For wine and cider consistency

High Pressure Liquid Chromatography is routinely used in all aspects of food and beverage analysis. This analysis is capable of detecting limits as low as Parts per Trillion (ppt)

The following analytes can be tested to meet your Due Diligence. This can satisfy demands from supermarkets with regards to beer sales and also when spent grains are used in the food chain.

  • Aflatoxins/Mycotoxins
  • Pesticide Residues
  • Ethanol
  • Ethylene
  • Methanol
  • Glycols

This method analyses many elements from the periodic table including heavy metal ions that are required by UK and European legislation to be below certain limits.

With this analysis we can provide you with the confidence and reassurance that your processes are complying with all legislation and guidelines.

Below is a list of just some of the ions we can test for both in raw materials and finished products:

Microbiology Laboratory:

Yeast Propagation

Tired of using dried yeast? Do you want to use a wet yeast culture?

Murphy and Son Laboratories can purify the yeast culture you have, or purchase new yeast from a culture collection. We will then store this for you for your own individual use and grow up sufficient quantity to pitch 1-20 barrels of wort.

Regular wet yeast from Murphy and Son Ltd ensures you have:

  • Continuity of supply
  • Your own unique yeast
  • Insurance against mutations
  • Ensure ongoing viability
  • Ensure consistent fermentation
  • Consistent quality

Murphy and Son Ltd have specially designed fermentation vessels to ensure we obtain the maximum cell count and viability of the yeast we supply. This is backed by a rigorous Quality Control Process to ISO 9001:2008 standard.
